Personal Life:

You know you're somebody special when you know the president and can look this comfortable with him. Oprah Winfrey surely is special, ecspecially considering her confusing childhood. Oprah was born on January 29, 1954 to her unmarried parents Vernita Lee and Vernon Winfrey. She was taught to read at age three. For a good portion of her childhood she lived with her grandmother on a farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi. When she was around the age of thirteen, she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to live with her mother. While in Milwaukee, she was sexually abused multiple times by her male relatives. Oprah started getting into trouble in her younger teenage years, and her mother sent her to live with her dad in Nashville, Tennessee. (McConnell, T. 2001) Oprah attended Tennessee State University on a scholarship. As a freshman in college she won the Miss Black Nashville and Miss Black Tennessee pageants. She was then offered a job from a local television station and became a news anchor on WTVF-TV Nashville. Upon graduating college she took on a news anchoring job in Baltimore for the evening news. She was eventually switched to morning news, which appeared on Good Morning America. That same year, she started cohosting the morning show Baltimore Is Talking. In 1984, Oprah moved to Chicago and took over A.M Chicago. A.M Chicago had ratings in the dumps, and within a month Oprah had the highest ratings in Chicago. The show was renamed to the Oprah Winfrey Show. Within years, the Oprah Winfrey Show was seen in 99 percent of television sets in the United States. And that's just the beginning. (Garson, H. 2004)

Recently, though, Oprah has announced her retirement from the show. After 25 years she's calling it quits.

Community Involvement:
Oprah Winfrey is a philanthropist for many causes. She was a major supporter of the National Child Protection Act, which was nicknamed the "Oprah Bill." The bill was signed into law in 1993 by Bill Clinton. She started "Oprah's Angel Network" which rewards and encourages people involving in charitable activity. More recently, in 2007, Oprah opened a Leadership Academy for Girls costing close to $40 million, close to Johannesburg, South Africa. The schools main goal is to provide a quality education for underpriveledged young girls. She is involved in Habitat for Humanity and A Better Chance.
